3 – Replace the Screen
If your device is out of warranty or you prefer a DIY approach, replacing the screen might be the best solution. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Tools needed:
- Replacement screen (available on Symetronix.com)
- Old credit card (or similar card)
- A cutter
1 – Remove the Back Cover
Use a small the cutter to open a space at the edge of the cover lid. Be very gentle and always do this on the side of the screen where there is the lanyard hole. Be very careful not to use too much force to avoid damaging the device.
The space you opened with the cutter has to be large enough to be able to insert the corner of the credit card in it. Once it’s done slide the card corner all around the cover until you are able to remove it. Don’t try to do this with the cutter or any metal object. You may damaged the case or the electronic board of your Ledger. Use a credit card or a guitar pick.
2 – Disconnect the Old Screen
Once the case is opened. Locate the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the device. It’s a thin, flexible strip that should be visible once the back cover is removed. There is a black clip at the base of the connector. Pull gently on it to open it, once opened the screen can be easily disconnected by pulling the connector. You should not use any strength, If you have to use strength it means the clip is not properly pulled. Never use strength.
Once the ribbon cable is disconnected, you can lift the old screen out of the device. Ensure you handle the screen gently to avoid breaking it in case you need to refer to it later.
3 – Install the New Screen
Take the new screen and position it in the same place where the old screen was. Ensure it is seated properly and aligns with the device’s layout. Reconnect the ribbon cable to the new screen and push down the black clip. Double-check that the connection is firm and properly aligned.
4 – Test your new screen
Before closing the cover plug your screen to your computer using your usual USB cable. The screen should light up. If it is not working unplug the screen and disconnect/reconnect it.
5 – Reassemble the Device
Replace the back cover by aligning it with the device and gently pressing it back into place. Ensure that it sits flush with the body of the device. Be particularly attentive that the buttons are in their holes and the screen is at the right place. If you put some pressure on the cover to close it but the button or the screen are not in their right place you could easily damage the electronic board or break your brand new display.
6 – Test your Ledger
Power on your Ledger Nano S to ensure the new screen is working properly. Plug it into your computer, enter your PIN, and check if the display is on.
Congratulation you now have a brand new Ledger Nano S!
